ACMA makes mobile roaming standard better for customers
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has amended the Telecommunications (International Mobile Roaming) Industry Standard 2013 (IMR Standard), following a direction from the Australian minister for communications in February to make the rules more customer friendly.
The ACMA had to adjust the IMR Standard to let customers have an opt out choice for receiving roaming usage alerts, allow telcos to provide mandatory on-arrival roaming information to travellers in a single SMS rather than in several, give telcos more flexibility in the ways they offer customers the ability to decline mobile roaming services while travelling overseas, at no or low cost, and delay requirements that MVNOs provide charging and spend management information from 23 May 2016 until 1 January 2019.
The ACMA consulted publicly on the draft Variation in February and March this year before finalising this instrument. Changes to the IMR Standard come in response to initiatives proposed by representatives of the telecommunications industry, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association and Communications Alliance.

3D Secure banned in Australia
3D Secure is a security product currently owned by Visa, but will soon be jointly owned by Visa, MasterCard, American Express and some others global payments companies.
Basically, the software detects if the purchase activity is unusual, and if it has any suspicions, will force you to enter a code sent via SMS to verify your identity.
The competition watchdog has announced that it intends to deny a request by the payments industry to force all online stores to use a particular kind of credit card fraud detection technology.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says that’s good news for consumers, because forcing roughly 60,000 online merchants to use the software would have cost nearly $400 million.
That cost, according to the ACCC, would have been passed directly on to shoppers.

bject 3 industries keeping SMS alive and kicking
In the last two decades, there has been explosive growth in the number of channels available for communication. What began with e-mail and automated calling systems has moved to text, social media, push notifications, Slack, and more. Too often, under the bright lights of innovation, effective, established technologies have been abandoned without considering if what has worked historically still has a place when incorporated into these newer technologies. This is what has happened to SMS: Direct access to customers has been misused (and sometimes, abused) and rather than evaluating where this technology fits into a larger customer strategy, many brands have shied away entirely from texting current and prospective customers. With 97 percent of Americans using SMS at least once a day, brands should understand how to use this mobile channel to deliver timely information that customers would otherwise seek out on their own, pairing SMS with other parts of their marketing program for ultimate engagement. For three industries in particular, this opportunity is there for the taking. http://thenextweb.com/insider/2016/06/03/sms-isnt-dead/#gref |
