MT

MT (Mobile Terminated) 

message transmission from a client (program) or an application to the end user’s handset.

MT messaging service is widely used in different fields :

1.Flight / Booking alerts and confirmations

2.Banking (transaction alert, balance update, password change etc)

3.Ads and coupons (promotional)

4.Verification messages (Registration codes for apps)

MO

MO ( Mobile Origination) 

message transmission from a handset device to a client (program) or application.

MO service is often used as part of 2-way SMS service (MT/MO combination).

In this case, companies send MT message first and receive a response from the end user.

Example :

MT : To unsubscribe from this newsletter reply STOP.

MO : STOP  (it will automatically be forwarded to the MT sender)
